Solo Travel Adventures in Delaware

Solo travel is a time for trying new things, exploring new places and going on new adventures, and Delaware is the place to travel solo. With its small size, you can journey through the entire state in just two hours! Choose the type of trip that you are looking for and check out the recommended listings below to build the perfect getaway and start checking things off your bucket list.

Breathing in Nature : A part of what makes Delaware so special is its abundance of outdoor recreation spaces, such as its 17 different state parks! Paddleboard at Cape Henlopen State Park (and check out Angler’s Fishing Center nearby for all your fishing needs), Go Ape! and zipline at Lums Pond State Park or bike at Killens Pond State Park. The opportunities are endless! For a stroll amongst wildlife, visit one of Delaware’s wildlife refuges like Bombay Hook National Wildlife Refuge or Prime Hook National Wildlife Refuge. More animals and furry friends can be found at the Brandywine Zoo! But if florals or farm animals are more your style, check out Lavender Fields at Warrington Manor, Brittingham Farms, Delaware Botanic Gardens or the Mt. Cuba Center.

Walking Through History : As the “First State,” a step in Delaware is a step back in time. Ride an antique train through scenic woods with Wilmington and Western Railroad, or visit Fort Delaware to experience a Union fortress dating back to 1859. Beautiful historic mansions and estates like Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, Nemours Estate and Hagley Museum and Library also line Northern Delaware. In Central Delaware, the capital of Dover is home to legislative buildings, the John Dickinson Plantation and the Air Mobility and Command Museum, showcasing aircraft from World War II. Cape Henlopen State Park also hosts World War II monuments, such as viewing towers and artillery, along the coast.

Coasting the Beaches : There’s nothing like taking some personal time to sit on the beach. Read that new book you just bought from Biblion or Browseabout Books, or swim in tranquil waters. With six different beach towns to explore, from quaint Lewes and bustling Rehoboth Beach to exciting Dewey Beach and serene Fenwick Island, there is a beach for everyone. Stop by Rehoboth Boardwalk or Bethany Boardwalk for coastal shops and dining options. End your day with a gorgeous sunset on the Delaware Bay with Cape Water Tours and Taxi.

Partying Solo But Never Alone : Delaware is known for its craft beverage scene. Take the Delaware On Tap trail to earn prizes for checking in to different breweries, wineries, distilleries, meaderies and more. Other restaurants are perfect for a little party, like Klondike Kate’s Restaurant and Saloon in Newark or the Big Chill Beach Club that sits right on the beach. For live music performances and a chance to dance, check out The Queen, Bally’s Dover Casino Resort, the Freeman Arts Pavilion or Bottle and Cork.

Shopping & Dining : Treat yourself with Delaware’s tax-free shopping experience! From Christiana Mall and Riverfront Wilmington to the Tanger Outlets, there are many shopping options to choose from. Delaware’s coastal cuisine is also not to be missed. From crab houses and sushi spots to sweet treats, choose carefully between both fine dining and casual dining experiences.

Embracing All Things Art : In the summertime, live music can be heard from just about anywhere. From Rehoboth Beach Bandstand to the Milton Theatre and The Playhouse on Rodney Square, see a musical or theatrical performance. For more artistry, try the Grand Opera House, Delaware Art Museum or Rehoboth Art League. You can even try your hand at creating your own work of art with The Artpothecary. Travel back in time with a film at The Clayton Theatre, a historical movie theatre that opened in 1949.

Exploring Local Favorites : There are some businesses that are easily missed by those who don’t look for them, but that is because they are hidden gems. In Central Delaware, visit Fifer Orchards for seasonal U-Pick experiences, and stop by Tre Sorelle Dolce for ice cream and mini golf. Mispillion Riverwalk is a special place full of small businesses along a peaceful river. The Millville Boardwalk in Southern Delaware offers mini golf, homemade ice cream and an arcade. Also, during the summer, visit the West Side Creative Market by the Developing Artist Collaboration. This hidden gem showcases the work of local artists while serving up great food and drinks!
